Vomiting and Diarrhea

One of the most common illness with animals is diarrhea or vomiting, or both.  There are many causes for this problem.  The most common being an upset stomach, they have eaten something which disagree with their stomach, eaten too much in one go, eaten too fast, exercised too soon after eating.

Many of the minor problems can be resolved and you can save yourself a trip to the veterinarian if you do the following:

1.Starve your animal for 24 hours, if your pet has diarrhea only then slowly reintroduce a Low Fat meal, giving small meals frequently.

2.If your animal have both diarrhea and vomiting then you must take away the water and food for at least 24 hours then firstly reintroduce water and if your pet does not vomit after taking the water then reintroduce the Low Fat food.

3.Observe your pet for lethargy and activeness.  Think about the cause of the problem.  Could your pet have eaten something like grass, garbage?  Has your pet been dewormed lately.  Take note on the colour of the vomit and diarrhea, and the frequency so you can report to your veterinarian if the problem persists.

If in doubt, call or see your veterinarian.  Your veterinarian may treat your animal systematically by prescribing a broad-spectrum antibiotic to control or prevent infection.  An anti-diarrhea mixture and anti-vomitting mixture or tablets.  If the patient improves and the vomiting and diarrhea is under control, then finish off the course of antibiotics.  But, if the symptoms persists even on medication then you must revisit your veterinarian for further advice.  Blood work may have to be done to further investigate into the cause of the vomiting and diarrhea.
