Ringworm

Microsporum canis

 

Is also known as Ringworm which is a fungal disease that affects the skin of cats and dogs. It is a highly contagious disease that may also be spread to susceptible owners. So please take care with cleanliness after handling your animals.

 

The animal is usually quite itchy and small patches of circle shaped lesions may appear on the coat.

 

Some animals may get better if left alone but it is always adviced to see your local veterinarian if you see these lesions.

 

The veterinarian may use an ultraviolet light to see if the ringworms are present.  Although only certain types of

 

 

 

ringworm are visible under the UV light.  Some veterinarians may perform a fungal culture by taking some hairs from your animal.  It usually takes one to two weeks for the results.  In the mean time your vet may prescribe some anti-fungal medications for your animal.

 

Fungal diseases usually takes a while to get better.  Your veterinarian may prescribe a course of medication which lasts for one month and a recheck is needed to see if your pet needs further treatment.
